Muddy Buddies

One of our Thanksgiving traditions is to snack throughout the day while the turkey is cooking. The theory is that this will save some room (and effort) for the big meal, though this is debatable when kids are involved. Case in point is one of their favorite snacks — Muddy Buddies.

While the largest component of this snack is indeed a “healthy” cereal, it also involves chocolate and powdered sugar, which, I’m not going to kid myself, is the main reason these are such a hit.

This is known in different regions by different names: it’s also called Puppy Chow (though I can’t bring myself to call it that) and for some reason, Trash.

These are extremely easy to make and really don’t require anything special. They also keep well in a sealed container or a large Ziploc, so you can make them the day or evening before and have them all set for a semi-hungry hoard the next day.

Muddy Buddies

9 c Chex or Crispix cereal
1 c semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 c peanut butter
1/4 c butter
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 c powdered sugar

Pour cereal into large bowl; set aside. Combine chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter in microwavable bowl. Microwave on HIGH 1-1 1/2 minutes. Stir in vanilla.

Pour chocolate mixture over cereal, mixing well. Put powdered sugar in large paper grocery sack and add chocolate coated mix; shake until coated with powdered sugar. Spread covered cereal out on wax paper and allow to cool.
