TWD Chocolate Truffle Tartlets
I came thisclose to not doing this week’s Tuesday With Dorie assignment for Chocolate Truffle Tartlets.
I didn’t have tartlet pans, I didn’t want to have to hunt down biscotti, and the directions made me exhausted just reading them. But then I got swept up in the enthusiasm and decided I needed to give it a shot, long process or not!
I ended up getting the tartlet pans from Amazon and managed to find a box of biscotti at the grocery store, so I was set. I warned my family ahead of time that I’d probably be baking for most of Sunday and to not get their hopes up about me participating in much else (yeah, that always plays out well).
This week’s project was hosted by Steph, Spike, Jaime and Jessica. You can find the recipe at any of their blogs.
The dough ended up being nice and easy to put together. I used the food processor method and instead of mashing it against the counter like the instructions said to, I squished it against the inside of a bowl instead (much easier to clean up!).
I ended up using morsels for all the chocolate. I already had it all on-hand and honestly, why mess with chopping when everything’s so perfectly ready and willing?
The eggs and melted chocolate were fun to play with and I had to not let myself get too carried away with the mixing.
The biscotti was really yummy, with slivers of almonds and the bottoms coated in dark chocolate. I felt a little bad about chopping them up, but there are still more in the box so I’ll be okay.
I was afraid there was too much filling for only six tarts, but it worked out perfectly.
It was torture waiting for them to cool.
The inside was deliciously gooey, and set up quite a bit more the longer they cooled (I did wait the full 20 minutes for these, I promise).
I think the only thing I’d change about these would be to add some chopped walnuts. Otherwise, they are perfection.
Mike helped out with the taste testing.
And I was able to bribe talk the girls into helping with dishes.
That looks so yummy!! And the chocolate just perfectly melted, I’m wishing I had more left in the fridge right now!!!

Hi Carmen! Thank you! They grumbled about it a little bit but I think knowing what their reward was helped them get through it ;D

I didn’t even think to use chocolate biscotti. I can imagine that would have made the chocolate flavor even more intense.

Hi Julia! I’m embarrassed to admit how long I stood there in the aisle deciding between the regular cookie biscotti and the chocolate. In the end I decided to go for broke 😀

haha! That’s the best when you can do all the hardwork and get someone to do your dishes so you can relax! 🙂 Great job! … I wasn’t feeling particularly motivated this week either, just exhausted mostly… LOL!

Hi Cheri! Thank you! That was my thought too, they look like big cookies!

Your tarts look great! I agree with you…I think adding nuts would make these tarts even more perfect and in a way, it’ll cut down the richness of the chocolate filling.

Hi Janis! Exactly, if I do make these again I’ll definitely be adding nuts!

I did not have tart pans either and bought some and I love them. Aren’t you glad you made these? I was hesitant at first too, but so glad i tried them.

Hi Peggy! I am really glad I made them — they were such a hit! The only downside is now I’m being bugged to make them again soon 😀

Yours look really delicious! I “hid” my mess by putting each thing in the dishwasher as I was finished with it,lol.

Those look so chocolatey! I didn’t have tartlet pans so I made one big one and didn’t have enough filling. I agree that this was delicious. Glad you decided to make it!

Hi Kara! Mine really set up after a few more hours of cooling, and weren’t gooey at all then. Of course, they were delicious either way 😀

Ha ha! I love that you showed all the dishes it took!! It seems like we all just post the perfect pictures…love it! Your pictures of the tart oozing looked SO delcious!! I cooked mine a little longer because I was concerned about cooking the eggs thoroughly so they came out with more of brownie consistency. Yours look devine 🙂

You had me with that top photo. If I were just blog hopping and not part of this baking group and had just happened upon your blog…I would have needed to bake these tarts from that one photo. Enjoyed your write up. If not for the group, I’d not bake lots of things that I do…I feel compelled to participate, even when not in the mood. You are right about getting caught up in the enthusiasm and I want to keep my commitment to the group…and I’m usually really happy that I do; so many wonderful things to try and a time limit to get them done.

So glad you made these. It would be a shame to miss out on such a good recipe (that is if you like chocolate). I agree it was a long process. I was exhausted at the end of the day, but full and happy! Good choice for your type of biscotti. I think the biscotti are an important component. Love the picture of the empty plate! Your’s look much more gooey than ours. Based on others comments, I placed mine in the fridge for about 2 hours after they’d completely cooled, and then brought them back to room temp. for after dinner dessert. They were a bit firmer, like a cross between a truffle and brownie.

Hi Michelle! Thank you! I’m glad I gave them a shot, too. They were pretty gooey and soft after the 20-minute cooling period, but they set up more like brownies after sitting at room temperature a while longer. I should have gotten a shot of them at that stage but they were already gone before I thought about it 😀
